Position History

The Campus Sustainability Coordinator is a part-time student intern, who reports to the chair of the Sustainability Advisory Committee formerly the Conservation Committee until 2010. Main duties include advancing environmental awareness and sustainability at Whitman, facilitating and promoting communication and cooperation between students, faculty, and staff on campus sustainability efforts, and facilitating research and understanding of Whitman's sustainability goals and challenges.

An early proposal for a Sustainability Director positon was submitted in 2001, as reported in external link: one internship report. The Sustainability Coordinator position was again proposed by Savanna Ferguson '06 and Campus Climate Challenge in the external link: Whit-ling Our Emissions report in Fall 2007. The report called for a full-time professional coordinator to be hired in a nationwide search.

In February 2008, among initiatives announced by President Bridges during Focus the Nation Walla Walla colleges Presidential Panel was the creation of a 10 hr/week internship open to students and recent graduates.

Twelve students applied during the first application round external link: search in May 2008. Karlis Rokpelnis was officially hired in September 2008.

Four students applied for the position in 2009 & 2010. As a result of a strong applicant pool and a desire to grow the position, 2 sustainability coordinators were selected for the 2010-2011 academic year. April 24th, 2009 Campus Sustainability Coordinator organized Get to Work Green Day in cooperation with Personnel Advisory Committee and Walla Walla businesses.

As part of the National Teach-In Karlis made a presentation titled external link: "Whitman and the Sustainable Campus" on February 4th, 2009.

In October 2008 Whitman held National Campus Sustainability Day events on campus for the first time.
